Tamz's Food for thought # 5 - Public Transit

Public Transit.  Where do I begin?  I commute via the train 2 to 4 times a week.

1. I drive on my later shifts because I do not want to be on a bus or a train when the freaks come out at night.  Some believe the street is like a night club and feel they have a right bother you.  Even during the morning hours, some of these creeper crawlers get really bold and try to strike up a conversation.  I could be wearing headphones, reading, writing or knitting.  If I am really involved in one of my activities, please don't bother me.  Better yet, please don't bother me at all.

2. Hygiene.  I get some may be homeless and I am more forgiving towards them.  But some people just reek.  It may be strong body odor or too much personal fragrance.  Not hot.  Not cute.  It can aggravate allergies and give people headaches.  Besides, people do not want to smell other people's funk.

3. Lack of consideration.  (See #2.) I know people have to get to work on time and have places to go.  We are all hamsters on a wheel, but it is common courtesy to say excuse me or pardon me if you bump into someone.  I have witnessed people go off on others, because of this.  Yet, people are so self-involved and in a hurry, they do not do this enough.   Also, some cough and sneeze without covering their mouths.  Look, there are those of us who do not want to get sick.  Be mindful of your germs.   Some people seem timid and won't move from the door or to the rear?  If you are scared riding public transit, don't take it.

4. Defecating, urinating or vomiting.  (See #3).  I grew up in Los Angeles taking public transit.  I have been on a bus where all three have happened.  If one has to do any of the three, just get off the bus.

5. Not letting people exit the train and/or bus before you board.  (See #3) If you are too much in a rush to get to your destination, perhaps leave your house earlier?  Is it really necessary to practically knock people over and push others out of the way just to get a seat?

6. Holding up the line getting on to the bus by asking the bus driver all kinds of questions and then, not having your bus fare ready.  Really?  I mean really? This is really inconsiderate of other people's time.   If you have a smart phone, look up the fare and the route.  If you do not, pick up a bus schedule.  They are still printing paper copies.

7.  Once people board, find a seat or stand, why do people insist on standing in front of the doors instead of moving back to the bus or moving in the middle so others can board and exit easier?  One of my biggest pet peeves is when people don't get off for 10 stops, but they stand right at the door the entire ride!  (See #3)
